Remembering & Reimagining

A picture speaks a thousand words and when these photos themselves span 200 years they tell a compelling story. Come experience a visual journey of the evolving ecological and cultural landscape of the Nilgiris in this exhibition curated by Jenny Pinto.

11:00 AM – 05:00 PM | A photo exhibition on the Social History of the Nilgiris

With beautiful, rare photographs collected from all over the world and from family albums in the Nilgiris, this exhibition takes you on a photographic journey through the many stories that coalesce in these mountains. From its stunning geological history and ethnography of the ancient tribes to the colonial history of tea plantations dotted with its charming multi-cultural towns.

The photos transport you, winding their way, much like a slow, beautiful journey on the heritage Nilgiri Mountain Railway, through the blue haze to the verdant hills with a colorful history.

Situated at the southern tip of the Western Ghats, the Nilgiris lies at the junction of the Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats. With towering peaks and rocks that are two and a half billion years old, they are older than the Himalayas. The region is also one of the most bio-diverse in the world with an
an amazing number of endemic species of plants, birds, and animals.

The Nilgiris have a deep history too, a history best understood with a sociological imagination because it is a story of many people over many centuries. Some who lived in harmony with the mountains, some who conquered them, others who colonized them, and yet others who ventured up and made them home. Not many regions in the world can boast of the extraordinary diversity of cultures that have traversed the Nilgiri Mountains. From the indigenous tribes, each with a unique culture and language, that lived here in relative isolation, despite various conquering kingdoms, until colonization totally transformed the eco-cultural landscape in the last two centuries as people migrated here from the far corners of the Indian subcontinent.

Photo-documented by several ethnographers, archaeologists, scholars, and photographers over the years, some of which are exhibited here, the exhibition also includes a special section of photographs of Albert T. W. Penn (1849-1924).

The exhibition is curated by Jenny Pinto with photos and contributions by Christopher Penn, Dr. Tarun Chhabra, Dr. Paul Hockings, Dr. Sharada Srinivasan, Monisha Raman, Ramya Reddy, Shobana Chandrashekhar, Vasant Bosco, K. Mathimaran, Kannan Ramaiah, Arjun Cheyyur, Shawn Stephen, Basel Mission, Sarmaya Arts Foundation, and many generous people of the Nilgiris.

Established in 2006, their collective background in Carnatic and Hindustani classical music, jazz’s rhythmic complexity, and diverse cultural influences have fueled their artistic journey. They are a world fusion band on a perpetual quest for self-discovery through music, embracing artists and styles from all corners of the globe. Nirmala Kannan

Rear Admiral Nirmala Kannan, a pioneer, graduated from Bengaluru’s Bishop Cotton Girls School in 1967. She joined the Indian Navy in 1977 after completing her MBBS, later achieving an M.D. in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from Mumbai University. Notably, she was the first female Armed Forces officer to attend the National Defence College in New Delhi. During her 37-year career, Nirmala earned two Presidential medals for exceptional service: the Nao Sena Medal and the Vishisht Seva Medal. Nirmala’s enduring passion for music led her to participate in Naval Symphonic Band Concerts during her service. Post-retirement in 2013, she pursued her love for singing, launching a YouTube channel during the COVID-19 lockdown. She believes music and learning new songs refresh the mind, especially as we age. Her philosophy is clear: “Aging is inevitable, but growing ‘old’ is a choice.” Nirmala’s advice to seniors is empowering: “Don’t let anyone say you’re too old to chase dreams or that you don’t belong.” At 70, she embodies this, remaining passionate and purposeful.

Following the success of their debut album ‘Cosmic Chant,’ praised as a top-tier Jazz-Fusion release by critic Narendra Kusnur, Rajeev Raja Combine presents ‘Jazzplorations.’ This new venture unveils an original repertoire inspired by their collective experiences, embracing the diverse musical forms and cultural influences that shape jazz. The result is a seamless fusion of Blues, Rock, Funk, Latin, and Indian Classical music. Led by flautist and composer Rajeev Raja, the band, popularly known as RRC, features exceptional Mumbai musicians: Chandana Bala (Vocals), Rahul Wadhwani (Piano/Keys), Hitesh Dhutia (Guitar), John Jaideep Thirumalai (Bass), and Vaibhav Wavikar (Drums). Rajeev envisions ‘Jazzplorations’ as a journey through jazz that stirs emotions ranging from happiness to excitement to rapture, culminating in an overall sense of peace and calm.

Sulaiman Jamal

Sulaiman Jamal, a man of diverse passions and origins, hails from Coimbatore, his journey marked by serendipitous encounters and enduring pursuits. His academic roots trace back to Stanes High School, culminating in graduation from PSG College of Engineering. In his college days, Sulaiman’s harmonica echoed through the corridors, marking his first musical sojourn. Yet, this melody momentarily faded, until destiny intervened at a gear convention in Detroit. Here, an accidental rendezvous with Jerry Murad of the Harmonicats, during a world harmonica festival, reignited his musical fire. Fate had no Indian delegates present, prompting Jerry to invite Sulaiman to join two fellow musicians in an impromptu performance. This experience expanded the horizons of the harmonica, rekindling Sulaiman’s devotion to the instrument. In gratitude, Jerry gifted him a set of Hohner instruments, conditioning him to reignite the harmonica’s soul. Today, Sulaiman resides in Bangalore as the Chairman of Bevel Gears India P Ltd, crafting high-end bevel gears for aerospace and defense. His work transcends the mundane; it’s a hobby interwoven with his ardor for music and classic cars. Sulaiman’s harmonica repertoire spans the spectrum, from Jazz and big band to blues and folk. For him, music is the elixir of life, an unceasing symphony that accompanies him wherever his path unfolds.
