Chandan Gowda

Chandan Gowda is the Ramakrishna Hegde Chair Professor of Decentralization and Development at the Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bengaluru. His work spans social history, literature, and political thought, making him a leading voice in contemporary Indian discourse.
His recent book, Another India: Events, Memories, People (Simon & Schuster, 2023), explores diverse narratives of Indian society. His forthcoming work, Birmingham in Mysore: The Colonial Origins of India’s Developmental State (Oxford University Press, New York), examines the historical roots of India’s economic structures. He is also co-translating and editing The Greatest Kannada Short Stories Ever Told (Aleph) and Daredevil Mustafa (HarperCollins, India). Gowda has previously compiled and edited The Way I See It: A Gauri Lankesh Reader (Navayana, 2017) and Theatres of Democracy: Selected Essays of Shiv Visvanathan (HarperCollins, 2016). He is also the author of A Life in the World: U.R. Ananthamurthy in Conversation with Chandan Gowda (HarperCollins, 2019) and writes a regular column for Deccan Herald.
