Colonel Ajai Shukla (Retd.)

Colonel Ajai Shukla (Retd.) is a leading defense analyst, columnist, and journalist, specializing in strategic affairs, military policy, and geopolitics. A former Indian Army officer (1979-2001), he served on multiple borders, including J&K, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan, and was part of a UN Peacekeeping Mission in Mozambique.
Post-retirement, he worked as a war correspondent and news anchor for NDTV (2001-2008), covering conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, and Syria. His writings appear in Mint, The New York Times, The Guardian, BBC, Al Jazeera, and South China Morning Post, and he runs the widely-read defense blog Broadsword.
He is currently working on two books—one on India’s military structure and battle-readiness (Penguin) and another on the Tibet-Arunachal border’s geopolitical history.
