Dilip Kumar is a celebrated short story writer and editor in Tamil, whose literary contributions have enriched contemporary Tamil fiction. Although his mother tongue is Gujarati, he has made a profound impact on Tamil literature, earning multiple awards for his work. His expertise extends beyond fiction, encompassing literary criticism and translations from Hindi, Gujarati, and English into Tamil.
He has authored three critically acclaimed short-story collections, including Kadavu (2010) and Ramavum Umavum (2017), and a notable critical study on Mouni, a pioneering Tamil short story writer. His editorial work includes Contemporary Tamil Short Fiction (later reprinted as A Place to Live by Penguin), a defining anthology of modern Tamil storytelling. His stories have been translated into several Indian and European languages, and four of his short stories have been adapted into award-winning short films.
His anthology Cat in the Agraharam and Other Stories, translated by Dr. Martha Selby and published by Northwestern University (US), won the prestigious Tamil Literary Garden Translation Award in Toronto. A distinguished speaker, he has delivered talks on contemporary Tamil literature at universities across India and abroad.
