K. Vijay Kumar, an IPS officer from the 1975 Tamil Nadu cadre batch, boasts a distinguished 37-year career in law enforcement. His journey encompasses a range of pivotal roles, highlighting his unwavering commitment and expertise.

During his illustrious career, Kumar undertook key assignments, including safeguarding the then Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, as part of the elite Special Protection Group. He also served as the Inspector General of the Border Security Force in Srinagar during the turbulent era of heightened militancy in Kashmir. Later, he assumed the mantle of Director-General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), showcasing his exemplary leadership and managerial skills.

Yet, it was his central role in Operation Cocoon that propelled him into the global spotlight. This meticulously executed mission successfully dismantled the notorious poacher and smuggler, Veerappan. Kumar’s gripping first-hand account of this operation is detailed in his book, “Veerappan: Chasing the Brigand.”

Throughout his career, Kumar garnered well-deserved recognition for his exceptional service to the nation. His accolades include the Jammu & Kashmir Medal, Counter Insurgency Medal, Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 1993, President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 1999, and the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry on the 58th Independence Day in 2005, specifically acknowledging his role in capturing Veerappan.

Before his recent retirement from active service, Kumar served as the senior security advisor in the Ministry of Home Affairs. His versatile career, marked by unwavering dedication and remarkable accomplishments, stands as an exemplary testament to leadership and commitment in the realm of law enforcement.
