Sumantra Ghosal

Filmmaker | Poet | Translator

Sumantra Ghosal is an acclaimed filmmaker and storyteller, with over 25 years in advertising, having crafted numerous successful commercials. After retiring from advertising, he transitioned into documentary filmmaking, focusing on the arts and cultural heritage.
His notable works include The Speaking Hand, a documentary on tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, The Unseen Sequence on Bharatanatyam dancer Malavika Sarukkai, and Kaifinama, an exploration of Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi’s life and legacy. He has also directed nine films for the Museum of Art & Photography’s “”Articulate”” series and continues to collaborate with Malavika Sarukkai on dance projects. A skilled translator, Ghosal has translated the works of Kaifi Azmi, Javed Akhtar, and Jan Nisar Akhtar, with his translations of Jan Nisar Akhtar’s poetry published in Dhanak (2022).
