Sumantra Ghosal

Filmmaker

Sumantra Ghosal, with over 25 years of experience in commercials, has crafted a significant number of successful advertising films across a wide range of brands. After retiring from advertising, he found a new calling in documentary filmmaking, focusing primarily on the arts.

His noteworthy creations include “The Speaking Hand,” featuring tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, “The Unseen Sequence” on Bharatanatyam dancer Malavika Sarukkai, and “Kaifinama” about Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi. He has also made significant contributions to the Museum of Art & Photography, having directed nine films in their “Articulate” series. Ghosal continues his creative collaboration with Malavika Sarukkai on her dance projects, contributing his poetic and design talents to works like “Thari – The Loom” and “The Battle Within.” He also lent his translation skills to the works of Kaifi Azmi, Javed Akhtar, and Jan Nisar Akhtar, with his translations of Jan Nisar Akhtar’s poems published in “Dhanak” in 2022.

Javed Akhtar will render his inimitable poetry in Urdu and Sumantra Ghosal will read it in English.

They will then converse on the art and craft of poetry translations with Anjum Katyal.
